But Ehlinger’s command of the starting job could spell the end for another Texas QB who is now weighing his options.According to 247Sports, Texas freshman Cameron Rising is planning a recruiting visit to Utah of the PAC-12.Rising entered his name into the transfer portal back in December.Another freshman quarterback for the Longhorns, Casey Thompson, also added his name to the transfer portal in December.Tom Herman addressed the two freshmen exploring transfers a few weeks ago, saying the lines of communication are open, and that he hopes they stay in Austin:“We’ve been very communicative with both families and both young men — they’re happy to be here, they’re happy to be a part of their team. I think this is the way of the world now. Guys that want to explore their options have that right to do so, but we also have the opportunity to communicate to them how important they are to our program.”One of the potential appeals of Utah to Rising is that Utes quarterback Tyler Huntley is going into his senior year in 2019.If Rising does join the Utes, he could be competing for a starting job in 2020. More on the Utes’ situation, from 247:Utah’s quarterback situation is one where the path to playing time is easier than how things look on the Forty Acres. While Rising will likely be behind starting quarterback Sam Ehlinger for two more seasons, Utah’s Tyler Huntley is entering his senior season with Utes in 2018, which could (in theory) have Rising battling Texas product Jason Shelley (Frisco Lone Star) for the starting nod in the spring and summer of 2020.247Sports had Rising rated as a four-star prospect coming out of high school in 2018. He was the No. 11 rated Pro-Style quarterback in the class, and the No. 33 prospect from the state of California. With the potential departures of Rising, Thompson, and veteran Shane Buechele, who has also been identified as a potential transfer since Ehlinger’s emergence.[247Sports]last_img
