Marathon to honour Mandela’s legacy

first_img3 July 2014 The Mandela Day Marathon, covering 42.2 kilometres from Pietermaritzburg’s Imbali township, where Nelson Mandela made his last speech as a free man, to Howick, where he was finally captured, gives South Africans an opportunity to honour the great man’s legacy through sport, the organisers said on Wednesday. “Each marathon has a personality, and ours is unique,” uMgungundlovu District Municipality Mayor Yusuf Bhamjee said at the official launch of the 2014 marathon at the Nelson Mandel Foundation in Johannesburg on Wednesday. “We have a race dedicated to the father of the nation, and via the AIMS-sanctioned Mandela Day Marathon, a world-class sporting event, we are championing understanding among all South Africans of where we come from and what Mr Mandela stood for.” The marathon takes place on Sunday, 31 August, with supporting events over the weekend including a children’s race, a 4.6664km run (commemorating Mandela’s prison number, 46664), a 10km road run, a 21.1km road run, and a 21km and 42km mountain bike dash and trail run. The total prize purse for the marathon is valued at R1.3-million. The overall male and female winners will each receive R50 000, while the first South African and first KwaZulu-Natalian home will also be rewarded. Twenty percent of all entry fees will accrue to the Nelson Mandela Foundation, to be donated to charities and institutions in KwaZulu-Natal that serve disadvantaged communities. Bongumusa Mthembu, the 2014 winner of the Comrades Marathon, will join veteran long-distance running stars Bruce Fordyce and Willie Mtolo and a number of radio personalities who have been chosen as ambassadors for the race. Race director Johan van Staden urged members of the public to enter the event as soon as possible, as entries will be capped at 10 000, and the closing date is 31 July. “We are thrilled that South Africa’s pro running clubs have pledged their top athletes to take part in the marathon,” Van Staden added. “We anticipate over 50 pro runners will take part.” For more information, and to enter, visit www.mandelamarathon.com. EPA worker protection rule takes effect, despite petition by AFBF

first_imgShare Facebook Twitter Google + LinkedIn Pinterest The Environmental Protection Agency has moved ahead with the Jan. 1 start date of its worker protection safety (WPS) rule, despite a request for a delay from the American Farm Bureau Federation and the National Association of State Departments of Agriculture.According to the joint petition from AFBF and NASDA to EPA Administrator Gina McCarthy, the WPS rule was issued in violation of federal law.The proposal, Farm Bureau and NASDA told McCarthy on Dec. 21, “fails to advance the purpose of furthering the safety of farmworkers.” The rule’s rapidly approaching implementation also posed “a serious problem for administration of the rule’s requirements” by state departments of agriculture as well as farmers and ranchers who must comply with its terms. The petition from AFBF and NASDA claimed EPA did not meet the law’s requirements when it failed to provide congressional agriculture committees a final copy of the regulations along with the copy sent to the agriculture secretary. The EPA has acknowledged that omission in responses to questions from Congress.“EPA’s failure to meet its statutory obligations deprived Congress of its lawful expectation of examining the regulation before its promulgation,” the petition states. The groups also claimed that the rule’s “designated representative” provision exceeds the scope of the WPS rule by depriving farmers of reasonable expectation of privacy for confidential business information. The groups said that the rule subjects farmers to potential harassment and public criticisms for lawful use of EPA-approved pesticides. In spite of the groups identifying problems related to equity and implementation of the WPS rule, EPA has not addressed the problems. The petition also asserted that the EPA has failed to finalize and deliver to state lead agencies the enforcement guidance, educational material and training resources needed to effectively implement the rule and assist farmers and ranchers with compliance efforts.“At this time, even if all of the compliance and enforcement materials were completed and distributed to all the appropriate state enforcement agencies, there is simply not enough time for the (state lead agencies) and the regulated community to successfully implement the provisions scheduled to take effect on January 1, 2017,” the petition stated. “In short, EPA has failed to develop and deliver the necessary resources for states to train the regulated community on the new requirements, and the agency has failed to comply with its own WPS Implementation Timeline.”last_img read more

LeBron James to sit out last 6 games of Lakers’ season

first_imgLos Angeles is 34-42 after beating Charlotte 129-115 on Friday night, with James scoring 27 points in what turned out to be his final appearance. The Lakers have won three of four since being eliminated from playoff contention last week with a loss to Brooklyn, their 10th in 11 games and their 28th in 42 games since Christmas.Los Angeles entered Saturday’s games with the NBA’s 10th-worst record. While a strong finish to the season could be a boost for the future, it could also damage the Lakers’ hopes of landing an elite talent in the draft.“We picked a hell of a time to have a great rhythm,” James said after the Lakers beat the Hornets. “We’re having fun. We’re playing the way we wanted to play all year, but obviously because of injuries, multiple lineup changes and things of that nature, that would affect it. But we’ve kind of known who’s going to be in the lineup over these last few games, and it’s allowed us to have our rotations down, and guys have been playing well.”Although James’ first season with Los Angeles was a failure, it showed promise before injuries changed everything.ADVERTISEMENT The Lakers were 20-14 and in fourth place in the Western Conference when James strained his groin during a stunning 26-point road victory over Golden State on Christmas. He sat out their next 17 games in the longest injury absence of his career.James returned to the lineup for good in early February, but the injury-plagued Lakers were unable to recover and make the playoffs.Along with James, the Lakers are finishing the season without three key players in their young core. Brandon Ingram has been out since March 2 due to a blood clotting issue, while Lonzo Ball hasn’t played since Jan. 19 because of an ankle injury, and Josh Hart was ruled out for the season this week with a knee injury.“I haven’t been a part of a season with this ton of injuries to all our key guys, to big, big key guys,” James said earlier this month. “It’s just the way the season has been. We’ve had guys step up … but for us, we prided ourselves on our depth to start the season, and obviously our depth has dwindled.”Earlier this season, the 34-year-old James expressed ambivalence about the possibility of shutting himself down early, saying such a decision would clash with his natural competitiveness. He also said he felt fresh after the least-busy season of his adult life. But Johnson and Pelinka apparently persuaded James of the wisdom of an early wrap to a lost year, followed by a fresh start in the fall.Overall, the Lakers went 28-27 with James in their lineup.Sports Related Videospowered by AdSparcRead Next Google Philippines names new country director “After consulting with our team doctors and medical staff, we have decided to hold LeBron out of games for the remainder of the season,” the statement said. “This decision will allow his groin to fully heal, and is best for the future success of both LeBron and the Lakers.”James is the NBA’s fifth-leading scorer at 27.4 points per game, and he averaged 8.5 rebounds and 8.3 assists in his first season on the West Coast. He will accompany the Lakers on their upcoming trip to New Orleans and Oklahoma City, but the 16-year NBA veteran won’t play again in his first non-playoff season since 2005, his second year in the league.FEATURED STORIESSPORTSPrivate companies step in to help SEA Games hostingSPORTSPalace wants Cayetano’s PHISGOC Foundation probed over corruption chargesSPORTSSingapore latest to raise issue on SEA Games food, logisticsJames appeared in the past eight NBA Finals with Miami and Cleveland, but he will finish this year playing in a career-low 55 games and a career-low 35.2 minutes per game for the Lakers. Despite James’ ballyhooed arrival along with Rajon Rondo and JaVale McGee to lead the Lakers’ talented young core, Los Angeles failed to overcome several major injuries and a midseason crisis of team confidence when the Lakers attempted to land superstar Anthony Davis in a multi-player trade.“It’s challenging, but I kind of knew what I was getting myself into,” James said earlier this month. first_imgSouthampton midfielder Ward-Prowse baffled by ref call: He admitted contactby Paul Vegas10 months agoSend to a friendShare the loveSouthampton midfielder James Ward-Prowse says he left baffled by the ref’s decision to wave away a penalty claim in defeat to Manchester City. With the scores level and half time approaching, Ward-Prowse was denied a penalty when he was nudged by City left-back Oleksandr Zinchenko in the box, before cruelly deflecting Raheem Sterling’s low cross past Alex McCarthy just moments later.“I was disappointed not to get it,” he said of the spot-kick. “It was a good ball from Jack (Stephens) and I knew that if I took my first touch across him I could get into the box.“When there was contact and it’s impeding my chances of scoring, I had to go down. “The referee says there was contact but didn’t give the penalty, which didn’t make any sense. He’d have to book me for simulation, which he didn’t, so no decision was made.” About the authorPaul VegasShare the loveHave your saylast_img read more
