HISTORIC DAY FOR BURTONPORT AS REVAMPED ‘RAILWAY WALK’ OFFICIALLY OPENS

first_imgAlmost 75 years, to the day, when the last train, on the Lough Swilly Burtonport Extension, steamed out of Burtonport, an exciting new development has taken place on the old railway track.A local committee, with financial help from Donegal Co. Council, Údarās na Gaeltachta, Donegal Local Development Company, Randox, The Cope and Burtonport Fisherman’s Co-op, embarked on a journey that has seen the area, now graced with one of the highest quality walkways in the Country. The Official Opening of the Railway Walk will take place, Friday 5th June, and the committee, wish to extend a warm invitation to all walkers, voluntary groups, railway enthusiasts and indeed anybody and everybody, who wish to come along and join them in their festivities.The evening will start at 7pm in St. Columba’s Community Centre, with a wine and cheese reception, followed by the official opening by Inga Bock, Rural Recreational Officer with Donegal Local Development Company.Afterwards, tea and refreshments will be served, followed by a traditional recital by Trād na nÓg, the cream of our young local musicians.There is a full day’s programme scheduled for Saturday 6th June also with a stroll along the walk, historic walks, traditional music and dance, and a series of talks by author Frank Sweeney, railway historian Joe Begley and others.
