Tottenham hero advised Arsenal to get Wenger because he helped him enhance this sort of skill

first_imgArsenal play Monaco in the Champions League last 16 with Gunners boss Arsene Wenger coming up against his former side.Wenger was in charge of the French club between 1987 and 1994 during which time he brought striker Mark Hateley and Tottenham icon Glenn Hoddle across the Channel after 12 years spent dazzling the White Hart Lane faithful. And Hoddle was very impressed by his new manager’s approach, revealing in an interview with the Mail on Sunday that he was introduced to warm downs after training sessions, something he never did in England.“There was a ballet bar and we had to put a foot up on it and stretch on that,” he said.“Well you can imagine. The other players fell about laughing at Mark and me. We had masseurs. I had never had a massage at Tottenham. Players would have said you were soft.“But over the months, we both became more supple and with a better diet I was soon fitter than I had ever been.”Following FA Cup and UEFA Cup wins at Spurs, Hoddle continued to collect trophies in France, winning the title and French Cup, then in 1996 told Arsenal to instal Wenger as their new manager.“Spurs fans won’t like me saying it, but I was England manager when he came to England and David Dein was on the committee. He phoned me about seven times. David was saying: ‘I’m the only one on the board who wants him. No one else has ever heard of him.’ And I said: ‘Go and get him. Wherever he goes he’ll be successful.’” 1 Glenn Hoddle played for Arsene Wenger at Monaco last_img
