Fundraiser honors victims of crash WHITTIER – Friends of local residents killed in a car crash this week will hold a fundraiser at 7:30 a.m. today at California High School, 9800 S. Mills Ave. The event is in memory of Joshua Gutierrez, 19, of Pico Rivera and Albert Valasquez, 19, of Whittier. They were killed Tuesday when the 2006 Toyota Scion they were riding in went out of control on Colima Road, just north of Mar Vista Street. The car hit a tree and was torn in half. WHITTIER – A Whittier man who police said fell asleep at the wheel drove his car up a sidewalk Friday and crashed into a brick wall on Greenleaf Avenue, near Banco Popular. Marcel Choiselat, 26, and his two children – a 6-year-old girl and an 8-month-old boy – were not injured, police said. He said he was driving his 2002 Volvo S60 north on Greenleaf shortly before 8:30a.m., when he hit and knocked down a traffic signal. The car jumped onto the sidewalk and came to a stop when it crashed into a brick wall outside Banco Popular. “He fell asleep after working a long night shift and he woke up when he hit the light pole,” Whittier Police Department Officer Jeremy Rounds said. Also killed was Jennifer Unzueta, 18, of Whittier. Driver Xenia Guerra, 18, and another passenger, Hector Saenz, 18, both of Whittier, were injured in the crash. Sunrise service set for Sunday WHITTIER – Rose Hills Memorial Park and Mortuary invites local residents to its Easter Sunrise Service at 6 a.m. Sunday at 3888 Workman Mill Road. The event will be hosted by several pastors from Whittier-area churches and will include scripture readings, hymns and prayers, as well as a traditional Easter message.
