Sumner County under high wind advisory today

first_imgSubmitted to Sumner Newscow — The National Weather Service in Wichita has issued a “red tag warning” for extreme grassland fire danger that includes Sumner County…in effect from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. today. This is a red flag day.For Sumner County this means it is highly recommended  NO OUTDOOR BURNING ALLOWED. But the Sumner County Sheriff’s office cannot enforce it, because a burn ban can only be proclaimed by the Sumner County Commissioners during a severe drought. Strong west to northwest winds of 20 to 30 mph will develop during the morning hours and spread eastward through the afternoon. These winds combined with low relative humidities and very dry vegetation will elevate the Grassland Fire Danger Index into the extreme category for central Kansas and very high for the southeast corner of the state.last_img
