Cardinal Newman uses big first half to beat Fortuna in 2016 season opener

first_imgFORTUNA >> It didn’t take long for the new-look Fortuna High football team to find out why Cardinal Newman is so highly touted.Led by senior quarterback Jordon Brookeshire and his four first-half touchdown passes, Newman led from start to finish in a 45-12 win over Fortuna, the reigning Big 5 champions, on Friday night in the first game of the 2016 season for both schools.“We knew, I knew, scheduling this game that it was going to be a tough one. Dinosaur Family Tracks Discovered

first_imgA set of dinosaur tracks of different sizes pointing in the same direction has been found on the Isle of Skye, reports the BBC News.  It seems to indicate one adult and 10 juveniles, all of the same species, were moving together.  To Neil Clark, curator of the Glasgow Museum, these tracks tell a story – not only that a mom hatched her young, but that they continued their family ties for some time: “It’s extremely rare to find evidence of post-hatching parental care in dinosaurs,” he said.  “To my knowledge, there are no other examples of ornithopod prints showing juveniles and adults moving as a group like this.  There is certainly evidence of juvenile ornithischian dinosaurs with adults from the same geological horizon, but not with such a clear relationship.”Observation: tracks of various sizes moving in one direction.  Conclusion: this was a loving family of dinosaurs, with loyal children gently following their tender mother up the beach.  Are such stories justified by the evidence?  Why not try my version: “Run, kids!  The water’s rising!”(Visited 12 times, 1 visits today)FacebookTwitterPinterestSave分享0last_img read more

A Tale of Two Falsifications of Evolution

first_imgIn diatribes against creationists, evolutionists have long pointed to antibiotic-resistant bacteria as examples of evolution in action.  Since antibiotics were unknown before the 1920s, debaters have taunted their creationist opponents with the claim that evolution is such an observable fact, we’re watching it happen right before our very eyes. The force of that argument has been undermined with a new discovery this week that pushes the “evolution” of such resistance way back before human civilization arrived.  Another article is claiming that human brain chemistry existed way, way back, “long before animals, brains and even nerve cells existed.” Antibiotic resistance:  An article on Science Daily began, “Scientists were surprised at how fast bacteria developed resistance to the miracle antibiotic drugs when they were developed less than a century ago. Now scientists at McMaster University have found that resistance has been around for at least 30,000 years.”  Gerry Wright and other McMaster scientists analyzed DNA from Arctic permafrost and found the genes for resistance there, including a gene for vancomycin resistance that was thought to have evolved in the 1980s. “We then recreated the gene product in the lab, purified its protein and showed that it had the same activity and structure then as it does now.”  (They noted that this is only the second time a protein has been reconstituted from ancient DNA.) Wright pondered the quandary raised by this find: “Antibiotic resistance is seen as a current problem and the fact that antibiotics are becoming less effective because of resistance spreading in hospitals is a known fact.  The big question is where does all of this resistance come from?”  It can no longer be seen as a recently-evolved trait in bacteria.  In fact, the McMaster team expects to find these genes in samples going back a million years, according to evolutionary dating. This requires a significant alteration of the evolutionary story.  “Antibiotics are part of the natural ecology of the planet so when we think that we have developed some drug that won’t be susceptible to resistance or some new thing to use in medicine, we are completely kidding ourselves. These things are part of our natural world and therefore we need to be incredibly careful in how we use them,” Wright said.  To rescue evolution, he turned to the personification fallacy:  “Microorganisms have figured out a way of how to get around them well before we even figured out how to use them.”  Lacking a brain, no microorganism has the power to figure out anything. Microbe brains:  In New Scientist, Michael Marshall titled a story, “Your brain chemistry existed before animals did.”  Dirk Fasshauer and team at the University of Lausanne found “a pair of essential neural proteins called Munc18/syntaxin1” in choanoflagellates – single-celled organisms from early life history in the evolutionary timeline.  “The finding is intriguing on its own, but much more significant when combined with a growing body of evidence that essential brain components evolved in choanoflagellates before multicellular life appeared.”  The proteins exhibit the three main functions of neurons: “carrying electrical signals along their bodies, signalling to their neighbours with neurotransmitters, and receiving those signals.”  This means that these proteins could not have emerged under some evolutionary pressure to invent brains or even central nervous systems.  To rescue evolution from this new finding, the article had to revise the story: “The choanoflagellates have a lot of precursors for things we thought were only present in animals,” says Fasshauer.  Today, says [Harold] Zakon [University of Texas at Austin], the nervous system seems “unbelievably complex”, but evidence from these tiny organisms suggests it was built up from several simple systems, which evolved separately for different reasons.  For instance, Fasshauer suspects M. brevicollis uses Munc18/syntaxin1 to secrete chemicals, much like neurons use it to release neurotransmitters. The very idea of a “precursor,” however, runs contrary to Darwinian theory.  Evolution, being blind and without foresight, cannot create a precursor to anything that might be useful in the future.  Nor can evolution evolve anything for “different reasons,” since there were no reasons, nor reasoning, for anything in the brainless age of choanoflagellates.  Darwinian theory was intended to rid science of teleonomic explanations (i.e., that organisms use proteins to secrete chemicals or neurons use proteins to release neurotransmitters).  Once again, the escape route taken by these researchers to save evolution was the personification fallacy, ascribing reasoning and planning to single-celled organisms. To repeat a principle that bears repeating in these commentaries, it’s not that evolutionists are unable to concoct a story to explain surprises in the data.  They are, after all, gifted storytellers.  It’s that the data require a story to maintain a belief – and to evade falsification.(Visited 115 times, 1 visits today)FacebookTwitterPinterestSave分享0last_img read more

Smit, Moolman Pasio in Cycle Challenge wins

first_img19 November 2013 Willie Smit captured the men’s honours and Ashleigh Moolman Pasio was the women’s winner in the Momentum 94.7 Cycle Challenge, the world’s second-largest individually timed cycle race, in Johannesburg on Sunday. Smit hauled in JC Nel of the UCI World Cycling Centre squad, a feeder team for Team MTN-Qhubeka, on the final climb, and went on to his first victory in the race in 2:08:42. His team-mate Herman Fouche made it a Team Bonitas one-two, with NuWater’s Johann Rabie taking third place. ‘Special’ “The team has worked hard this year and we wanted to finish 2013 in a special way,” Smit said after the race. “It’s a great feeling to be standing on the podium and the victory tastes that much sweeter with a teammate next to you.” There were two telling moves in the men’s race. The first occurred when the leading cyclists left the highway and headed up Joe Slovo Drive, which resulted in a splintering of the riders, with a group of 40 then moving to the front and upping the pace. With less than 10 kilometres to go, Smit, concerned about the sprinting prowess of Team Abantu’s Nolan Hoffman, made a second move, which was matched by HB Kruger and Dan Craven, while JC Nel was about 20 seconds ahead of the chasers. Hoffman failed to follow.Second win National road race champion Ashleigh Moolman Pasio lifted the women’s title for a second time, having previously won in 2011, with defending champion Sharon Laws coming home in second place, and Anriette Schoeman in third. The victory brought the curtain down on the Momentum Toyota Team, which Moolman Pasio had joined when it started five years ago. During those five years, the team succeeded admirably as it sought to develop world class female South African road cyclists. Moolman Pasio proved to be the best of the lot and this year moved into the top 15 of the world rankings. Many other leading South African riders were also members of the team during its half-decade existence, including Lynette Burger, Lizanne Naude (Van der Merwe), Anriette Schoeman, Leandri du Toit, Andri Coetzee, Heidi Dalton, Cherise Taylor (Stander), Robyn de Groot and Joanna Hotchkiss (Van de Winkel).Overseas partnership The team management also developed an overseas partnership with the Belgian- based Lotto Belisol team to ensure the riders had access to international races during South Africa’s quieter winter months. The relationship strengthened to the point that some Momentum Toyota riders were offered full contracts with the European squad. “This is such a wonderful event. It’s great to win it again, but more amazing to have two Momentum Toyota riders on the podium. Our objective was to win today and that objective was achieved,” Moolman Pasio said during a post-race TV interview. “I’m grateful for the time with Momentum Toyota. It’s been great for my career and I’m looking forward to the next chapter.” “While we are ending the professional racing team as such, we will continue in our capacity as the Toyota Supercycling Club to support the three young riders that shone on the team this year – Heidi Dalton, Andri Coetzee and Leandri du Toit,” confirmed Burger, who has fulfilled a role of manager, rider and mentor on the team for the past two years.last_img read more

How to Get Better Color Grades Using Opacity Blend Modes

first_imgHere’s the post-production guide (and photo tour) to how and why you should incorporate opacity blending into your next project.Opacity blending isn’t something I hear editors or colorists talk about all that much. The 27 opacity blend modes in Premiere (or those found in any other NLE, for that matter) each interact and affect footage in radically different ways — not to mention the near-infinite possibilities that arise from adjusting the blending controls and looks.I have found tremendous success with my grades by incorporating a toolbox of opacity-blending tricks. In this guide, we’re going to examine three of my most-used opacity tricks when grading. To do this, we’ll work with a still from a film I shot on 16mm several years ago. My main focus with the adjustments and grade I applied to this footage was not the quality of my grade but, rather, what I could achieve by combining basic grades with adjustment and opacity layers. 1. Grading with Color MattesThe first trick I’m going to show you is using color mattes. We’re creating a color matte from the Add Item menu and setting the color to an orange that will work as a healthy skin tone for our subject. From here, we’re just adding it to the timeline on a higher video track before heading to the effect controls panel. Now, I’m selecting the Darken blend mode and setting the opacity to 50 percent.I can fine-tune the results by selecting the color matte and going into the Lumetri panel. Depending on what you’re blending, the blend mode (and blend percentage) of each of the sliders in the Basic Corrections tab alters the image in a different way. For this correction, I was mostly aiming to recover some of the exposure we lost when applying the darken blend. Now that we have our basic levels adjustment on our clip and blend layer, I am adding an adjustment layer over both. I’m using this adjustment layer to bring us back to acceptable exposure without altering the results of our color matte blend. You can “blend up” opacity in the timeline as well. For this next step, we’re going to add a blue color matte underneath the source video. We’ll be doing this so you can lower the percentage to an acceptable range. This is just another way you can add steps, mattes, and layers to your image. With a good blend dialed in, I am popping over to the Lumetri panel to begin making tweaks to our underlay color. After you’ve done this, you’ll need to dial down the highlights. We’ve got to get the exposure under control.Perfect. We’ve brought our exposure back in line and have really enriched the skin tones of the subject. Because we darkened the image a bit more, I am going to raise the opacity on our orange overlay to enhance the look we’ve given to the shot. I know that I’ve introduced a little bit of noise to the shot, but I’m not too worried about it at this point. 3. Separating Highlights and ShadowsOne of the most useful ways to apply grades to the lows and highs of your clip separately is through a combination of blend modes with HSL selection.I’ve once again nested the previous results, but this time I have duplicated our source video twice. The bottom video layer will remain our unaltered “blender,” the second layer is our shadows, and the third is our highlights. For our second shadow layer, I’ve set the blend mode to Darken and the opacity to about 75 percent. Now, I’m in the HSL panel of Lumetri, where I have deselected the Hue and Saturation qualifiers and have selected only the shadows on the Luminosity qualifier. Then, I’ve moved to the top (highlights) layer, where I have selected the Lighten blend mode and kept the opacity at 100 percent.I enabled the Color/Gray check box to see my selection and then selected the mids and highs of the image with the Luminosity qualifier. After that, it is just a matter of a few adjustments to the basic correction sliders. All that’s left for me to do is compare the final correction with the uncorrected clip to see if I’ve done anything horrible to the footage.Overall, I really love how much I could make this shot pop. Sure, we’ve raised the noise levels in the shot quite a bit, but luckily I’ve got a trick for that.Opacity blending can be intimidating in Premiere since not everyone understands the blend modes and how each one differs. However, I hope this article inspires you to dust off some of your old footage, load it up, and get blending.Looking for more articles on color grading and post-production? Controlling Color with Black and White Adjustment LayersAn incredibly powerful trick for controlling color levels is to add an adjustment layer and desaturate before applying one of a couple blending modes. The first thing I’m doing is nesting all of the video, adjustment, and opacity layers that we just worked on. Then we’re going to the Saturation slider in the Basic Correction panel and reducing it to 0 percent. Then set the blend mode to Soft Light.Using the Soft Light blend mode in conjunction with a black-and-white adjustment layer is going to give us good control over the color contrast in the scene for a classic “bleached” look. We can adjust the strength of this effect by making adjustments in Lumetri or by adjusting the blend percentage.I’ve duplicated my adjustment layer, reset Lumetri, and changed the blend mode to Luminosity.Using the Luminosity blend mode with a black-and-white adjustment layer gives us direct control over the color luminosity levels in the shot, allowing us really granular control. And then, go crazy with the curves! Now just apply a couple of quick adjustments to the Basic Corrections sliders, and I think we’re looking good. Also, I’ve duplicated and reset my adjustment layer and am applying the Overlay blend at 30 percent. However, since we’re not going for the bleached look, I’m making some adjustments to bring the contrast a little back in line. Remember that it’s okay to backtrack and change things up. Its all about finding an image that looks good to you and fits the story. To finish this out, I am previewing the shot with and without our “bleach” layer. I’m definitely liking it with all of the corrections we did. The bleach layer really helps to bring some of the magenta out of the skin tones. We’ve lost a little bit of exposure and brought our noise up a little more, but I like the feel of our footage a lot more now.last_img read more

Two warkaris killed, 15 hurt in road mishap near Pune

first_imgTwo warkaris were killed and 15 injured after a JCB earthmover mowed down a group of pilgrims at Dive ghat near Saswad, 25 km from Pune city. The deceased included Sopan Namdas (35), said to be the 17th descendant of the 14th century Saint Namdev (a significant figure in the Bhakti movement) and his disciple, Atul Alashi (23).The warkaris had set out from the temple town of Pandharpur carrying a palanquin bearing footprints of the poet-saint Namdev, and were heading towards the holy city of Alandi when the tragedy occurred. A pall of gloom descended among the pilgrims with the passing away of Sopan Namdas.According to police authorities, the driver of the JCB machine, which was heading to Pune from Saswad, lost control after the brakes of the machine allegedly failed, causing it to crash into the group of warkaris near Dive ghat. The driver was later arrested under section 304 (2) (culpable homicide not amounting to murder) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), a police official said. “Despite the frequency of such accidents, police have not provided us with adequate protection. We request that the authorities take serious note of this during the wari (the annual pilgrimage to the shrine of Lord Vithoba in Pandharpur),” said a pilgrim. The injured were rushed to Noble multi speciality hospital in Hadapsar.“Two warkaris were brought dead while two others, one of whom suffered head injuries, have been admitted to the ICU and are critical. The others suffered minor injuries and will be discharged soon,” said Dr. H.K. Sale, Director, Noble Hospital.Offering his condolences, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) State chief Chandrakant Patil, after a visit to the hospital, said the party would bear the expenses of those undergoing treatment from a special party relief fund. “The BJP has formed a special relief trust from which they will give ₹5 lakh compensation to the kin of the deceased and bear the medical expenses of those under treatment. A persistent refrain from the warkari fraternity is that they ought to have adequate police protection. We will work on this immediately once a government is in place,” said Mr. Patil.District Collector Naval Kishore Ram, who also visited the hospital, said a proposal to provide financial aid for the deceased and injured is being forwarded to the State administration.last_img read more

Migrant kids separated at border faced abuse in foster homes

first_img Categories: Local San Diego News, National & International News, Politics FacebookTwitter AP, Posted: August 16, 2019 WASHINGTON (AP) — This story is part of an ongoing joint investigation between The Associated Press and the PBS series FRONTLINE on the treatment of migrant children, which includes an upcoming film.___Dozens of families separated at the border as part of the Trump administration’s zero tolerance policy are preparing to sue the federal government, including several who say their young children were sexually, physically or emotionally abused in federally funded foster care.A review of 38 legal claims obtained by The Associated Press — some of which have never been made public — shows taxpayers could be on the hook for more than $200 million in damages. More than 3,000 migrant children were taken from their parents at the border in recent years and many more lawsuits are expected, potentially totaling in the billions. The families — some in the U.S., others already deported to Central America — are represented by grassroots immigration clinics and nonprofit groups, along with some of the country’s most powerful law firms. They’re making claims under the Federal Tort Claims Act as a precursor to filing lawsuits. The FTCA allows individuals who suffer harm as a direct result of federal employees to sue the government.“It’s the tip of the iceberg,” said Erik Walsh, an attorney at Arnold & Porter, which has one of the world’s leading pro bono programs. The firm has so far filed 18 claims on behalf of nine families, totaling $54 million, and Walsh says dozens more are likely. The government has six months to settle FTCA claims from the time they’re filed. After that, the claimants are free to file federal lawsuits. The departments of Justice and Homeland Security, both named in the claims, did not respond to requests for comment.Health and Human Services — the agency responsible for the care of migrant children — said it couldn’t comment on pending litigation, but that it treats children with dignity and respect.Last year, HHS’s Office of Refugee Resettlement cared for nearly 50,000 children who crossed the border by themselves, as well as children who were separated from their families under the zero tolerance policy. The agency housed them in foster programs, residential shelters and detention camps around the country, sometimes making daily placements of as many as 500 new arrivals, from babies to teens. The allegations of abuse and assaults in foster care raise fresh questions about the government’s efforts to place younger children with families in lieu of larger shelters and packed detention facilities. The legal claims, a recent federal court filing and HHS documents released by Congress earlier this year allege that children have suffered serious emotional trauma after being physically harmed or fondled by other children while in foster care.Six of the claims for damages involve children who were in foster care. And one recent court filing refers to a migrant child being abused in foster care. The records released by Congress show the Office of Refugee Resettlement referred at least seven foster care allegations of sexual abuse to the Justice Department in 2017 and 2018. Because some are anonymous to protect the children’s privacy, it’s unclear if some of the claims are duplicates.Justice has not responded to repeated queries about those cases from members of Congress.Three of the four incidents involving physical harm outlined in the FTCA claims occurred at Cayuga Centers in New York, the largest foster care placement for migrant children, housing up to 900 babies and children at a time.Cayuga Centers did not respond to requests for comment. One Guatemalan mother whose 5-year-old daughter was placed in Cayuga last year says her little girl still wakes up crying from what she endured at the foster home.“Now she’s scared each time we go out or when she sees a police car or someone in uniform,” said the mother, who has filed a $6 million claim. “She says ‘Mami, don’t let them separate us again.’”Families who spoke to the AP and FRONTLINE did so on the condition of anonymity over fears about their safety.Another 5-year-old Guatemalan girl said a boy grabbed her chest and touched her inappropriately, both in her foster home and during daytime classes at a Safe Haven for Children New York foster program, according to a $3 million injury claim. The girl was moved to a new foster home but suffered verbal abuse from her foster parent’s mother, who called her names and locked her alone in rooms as punishment, according to the claim.A spokesman for Lutheran Social Services of New York, which oversees the Safe Haven foster program, declined to comment. Two claims blame the government for wrongful deaths: one, seeking $20 million, was filed by the wife of a Honduran father who killed himself in a padded cell after officers pulled his 3-year-old son from his arms.“The people making these policies intended this level of suffering, and that’s what’s unconscionable,” said John Escamilla, who is representing the man’s wife and two children. He said he plans to file a federal lawsuit stemming from his FTCA claim as soon as Friday. The government has not settled any family separation cases in the administrative claims stage. But one federal lawsuit is currently in litigation in Massachusetts, and in February, a judge approved a $125,000 settlement for a Honduran mom and her son, then 6, who had been detained for four months and threatened with separation under the Obama administration.Aseem Mehta, a law student at the Jerome N. Frank Legal Services Organization at Yale Law School who worked on the case, said the settlement — the first of its kind — sends a clear message that such claims have legal standing.“Our case is a benchmark,” Mehta said. “The most important take away is these claims are viable, and courts will entertain them, and the Department of Homeland Security views them as meritorious; they don’t settle cases unless they think there’s liability they’re exposed to.”Janet Napolitano, who led Homeland Security from 2009 to 2013, said she recalled a number of tort claims were filed against the agency in her time but said family separations were rare. The Trump administration’s failure to swiftly reunify families and children may have left the agency open to lawsuits, she added.“There very well may be some vulnerability there,” said Napolitano, now the president of the University of California. Consult your local newspaper for more information on potential sources in your neighborhood. You can also find wholesale lots on eBay. Go directly to any category, and look for a subcategory for “wholesale lots.” You can find the entire list of eBay wholesale categories by going to the eBay home pageand scrolling down to the last category in the list of categories located on the left-hand side of the page. Some sellers have found a product source by contacting a manufacturer’s sales department directly and arranging for bulk purchase of merchandise for resale on eBay. But remember, no matter what product source you decide to use, it’s very important to sell something you know about and preferably are passionate about.See “May the Source Be With You,” for more tips on product sourcing. Q:How do I offer my listings to buyers outside of the United States? A:There are many ways of viewing, searching and sorting eBay listings to view those with the most activity and the highest bid amounts. Within any given eBay category, you can sort the category list by highest price first to view those with the highest prices. You can then scroll through the list to see the items with the highest number of bids, a good indicator of an item’s desirability. It is not possible, however, to sort by number of bids. You can also filter a search or category to show only Completed Items (items that have sold within the past two weeks), and then scan those for the number of bids and highest bid amounts. To view Completed Items using a keyword search of the entire eBay site:Click on the “Search” link found at the top of any eBay page.Click on the “Advanced Search” tab.Enter your keywords.Check the box for Completed Items. To view Completed Items using a keyword search of a single category:Navigate to the first page of the chosen category.Enter keywords into the box provided.Check the box for Completed Items, found on the left-hand side of the page.Click the “Show Items” button. If you want to view all Completed Items for a particular category:Go to the category’s first page of listings. On the search results page, check the box for Completed Listings under the “Search Options” section on the left.Click the “Show Items” box.eBay has made this even easier by compiling a Hot List for sellers. Simply log on to www.ebay.com/sellercentraland click on “What’s Hot” from the menu on the left. For more information on keeping up with product trends, turn to “Bestseller Lists.” Growing Your Business October 1, 2004 This hands-on workshop will give you the tools to authentically connect with an increasingly skeptical online audience.
