first_imgSouthampton midfielder Ward-Prowse baffled by ref call: He admitted contactby Paul Vegas10 months agoSend to a friendShare the loveSouthampton midfielder James Ward-Prowse says he left baffled by the ref’s decision to wave away a penalty claim in defeat to Manchester City. With the scores level and half time approaching, Ward-Prowse was denied a penalty when he was nudged by City left-back Oleksandr Zinchenko in the box, before cruelly deflecting Raheem Sterling’s low cross past Alex McCarthy just moments later.“I was disappointed not to get it,” he said of the spot-kick. “It was a good ball from Jack (Stephens) and I knew that if I took my first touch across him I could get into the box.“When there was contact and it’s impeding my chances of scoring, I had to go down. “The referee says there was contact but didn’t give the penalty, which didn’t make any sense. He’d have to book me for simulation, which he didn’t, so no decision was made.” About the authorPaul VegasShare the loveHave your saylast_img read more

City have won the Premier League for the past two seasons, while main rivals Liverpool have reached successive Champions League finals, winning the last one earlier this year.Asked how much they would like to win the Champions League, Berrada said: “A lot, of course, but what we don’t want to do is obsess. It is something we believe will come.“Of course it would give us one more point at the brand level, but it is a very random competition. Especially in the elimination phase.“I would say that not always the best team wins the Champions League, but usually the best team wins the league.” last_img read more

Campbell Soup plans to sell international fresh units

first_imgCampbell Soup Co. plans to focus on its core snacks and soup business in North America and sell its international business, paying down debt. The Camden, New Jersey, company said Thursday it’s working urgently to complete all the moves by next July. The planned sales will leave Campbell Soup with brands including Goldfish, Pepperidge Farm and Snyder’s of Hanover. The company announced a reorganization in May, along with the retirement of then CEO Denise Morrison, as it faces a mix of changing food trends and potentially costly tariffs on aluminum and steel.Campbell’s has been wrestling with declining soup and juice sales in a market crowded with competitors at the same time that many families are seeking foods they consider healthier and less processed.Earlier this year, Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross famously held up a can of Campbell’s soup in a CNBC interview to make the case that the Trump administration’s steel and aluminum tariffs were “no big deal.” The company has said that it expects steel and aluminum costs to rise, pushing its overall costs higher.Fourth-quarter profit plunged 70 per cent to $94 million, or 31 cents per share, as surging costs outpaced a revenue boost. Still, the results topped Wall Street expectations.Sales rose 33 per cent to $2.22 billion, but fell short of forecasts. In premarket trading, shares of the company slipped 2.4 per cent to $39.05. Shares are down nearly 17 per cent in the year to date.last_img read more

Huawei wants India to remove hurdles for 5G spectrum

first_imgShenzhen: Chinese telecom equipment major Huawei on Tuesday said that India should address the constraints in the spectrum availability to make 5G technology-based services a success in the country. Speaking to IANS on the sidelines of the Huawei Global Analysts Summit 2019 here Huawei Executive Director David Wang, who is also the company’s ICT strategy head, also pointed out that the Indian telecom market is currently faced with excess competition. Also Read – Swiggy now in 500 Indian cities, targets 100 more this year “Huawei would like to see India become more attractive in terms of 5G. We hope to see more changes in the Indian market..there is lack of spectrum for 5G operators which could affect the services. If the constraints present in the 4G is there in 5G as well, then these constraints might hamper growth,” Wang said. Huawei Deputy Chairman Ken Hu said some of the growth irritants of 4G in India should not be repeated. These problems had made it difficult for telcos to make profits with the 4G spectrum in the face of excessive competition in the telecom services market. Also Read – New HP Pavilion x360 notebook with in-built Alexa in India “If operators are struggling to make profits under 4G, I wonder how will they become profitable in 5G. Competition in Indian market is overheated”, Ken said. “My personal view is that for a very long time after 4G deployment, eMBB will be the main scenario. If operators are already struggling to gain profits on eMBB scenario under 4G, then I wonder how do they make profits under 5G””, he added. eMBB, or enhanced Mobile Broadband, is one of the three sets of used cases defined for 5G. Huawei which has faced security concerns in some parts of Europe and in the US, said that it is already in the Indian government’s invitee list for 5G trials, as and when these take place. “We were invited by the Indian government last year to conduct field trials for 5G and also participated in used cases and researches with operators in India. Huawei is deeply engaged with the Indian market on 5G,” Wang said. “India is similar to China and other growing markets in terms of requirements and ICT and is an important market for us”, he added. Huawei has undertaken 5G demo trials, alongwith Airtel and Reliance Jio, at the Indian Mobile Congress. India’s Department of Telecom so far has not taken any decision on the time period for 5G trials as the telecom operators have differences over the quantum of spectrum to be allotted and the duration of the field exercise. While the operators demand a one-year minimum period for trial, the government says it only allot spectrum for 90-day trials. The Indian telecom services market is facing severe competition, with a tariff war unleashed by Reliance Jio already affecting telcos’ bottomlines. They are already complaining about the high high reserve price of the next spe4ctrum auction slated to take place later this year. Huawei has been present in India since the last decade in the telecom equipment business and has so far worked with Airtel and BSNL. It faces completion from fellow Chinese rival ZTE, Korean major Samsung, and the European firms Ericsson and Nokia.last_img read more

Bengal braces for stormy weekend as Fani approaches

first_imgKolkata: With less than 24 hours left for Cyclone Fani to make landfall in neighbouring Odisha coast, the West Bengal government and civic bodies on Thursday worked on war footing to cope with the storm set to travel across state starting early Saturday. The Kolkata Municipal Corporation has formed a team along with various departments like the Police and Disaster Management to monitor the measures being initiated to prevent any untoward happenings. “The pumping stations will be on alert mode from Friday. ‘Economic growth, high disposable income to aid banks’ deposit mobilisation’

first_imgMumbai: Accelerating the rate of growth of the economy and disposable incomes holds the key to higher deposit mobilisation by the banking system, says an RBI paper. The slowdown in bank deposit growth in the recent period alongside a revival of credit demand raised concerns about a structural liquidity gap in the system, possibly amplified by substitution effects of small savings and mutual funds on bank deposits in the aftermath of demonetisation, as per an article published in the latest monthly bulletin of the RBI. Also Read – Commercial vehicle sales to remain subdued in current fiscal: IcraTo address the issue of structural liquidity gap, the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) in recent months took several initiatives including Open Market Operations and dollar rupee swap auction. The article highlighted that the widening wedge between credit and deposit growth is triggering concerns about a structural liquidity gap in the system, which can throw sand in the wheels of the financial intermediation process through which deposits are converted into productive investments by way of lending, thereby greasing the wheels of the economy. Also Read – Ashok Leyland stock tanks over 5 pc as co plans to suspend production for up to 15 days”Outstanding deposits of scheduled commercial banks (SCBs) at Rs 1,25,726 billion as on March 31, 2019 accounted for 128.7 per cent of outstanding bank credit (lower than 132.5 per cent a year ago), reflecting the tightening of financial conditions on account of low deposit growth,” it said. Noting that the bank deposits remain an important part of the financial savings of households and key to the financing of bank lending, it said deposit growth is picking up in recent months in a cyclical upturn since December 2018, which is overwhelming a trend slowdown that has been underway since October 2009. “The latter warrants policy consideration since deposit mobilisation is fundamental to India’s bankbased system of financial intermediation. Empirical evidence puts forward several interesting facts about the behaviour of bank deposits,” it said. First, it underscores the income as its most important determinant, both in the short-and in the long-run, it said. It further noted that interest rate matters for deposit mobilisation but only at the margin and financial inclusion has a boosting effect on deposit mobilisation over the long-run suggesting expansion of bank branches in unbanked areas. Besides, substitution effects associated with Sensex returns for deposit growth are limited to the short-run, warranting a careful appraisal of regulatory reforms and tax arbitrage, even as efforts need to be intensified to make both more market determined. “In the final analysis, therefore, accelerating the rate of growth of the economy and disposable incomes holds the key to higher deposit mobilisation by the banking system,” it said. The RBI in a disclaimer said that views are of authors and do not represents the views of the central bank.last_img read more

Terrelle Pryor undergoes successful surgery on injured foot

Sugar Bowl MVP Terrelle Pryor had surgery Friday to “stabilize a ligament” in his right foot, an Ohio State spokesman confirmed to The Lantern. Pryor tweeted about 4:30 p.m., “Surgery successful.” At noon on Saturday, Pryor posted, “I’m doing good. Resting. Foot up. Can’t do much but lay around. And write in my journal.” Pryor injured his foot during the fourth quarter of Tuesday’s 31-26 win over Arkansas. He sat out a play on OSU’s penultimate drive, replaced by backup Joe Bauserman. Pryor was limping considerably following the game and said he was in a lot of pain. The junior quarterback threw for 221 yards and two touchdowns and rushed for 115 yards against the Razorbacks. Pryor is one of five OSU players suspended for the first five games of the 2011 season after the NCAA learned those players sold memorabilia to the owner of a Columbus tattoo parlor in 2009. NCAA rules prohibit student-athletes from receiving benefits based on their personae. Pryor said repeatedly that he will return to OSU for his senior season. Coach Jim Tressel made the five suspended players pledge to return before granting them permission to travel with the team to New Orleans for the bowl game. read more

Commentary NBC Sports Network big upgrade over Fox Soccer

Last week was the start of something new for American fans of the English Premier League; it was also the start of something great. For years now, Fox Soccer Channel has dictated how we watched a sport loved across the world, but after the debut of NBC Sports Group coverage of the EPL on Aug. 17, I believe we can now breathe a sigh of relief.Back in October 2012, NBC Sports Network bought the rights to show EPL matches when it outbid Fox and ESPN, although Fox will still carry the UEFA Champions League and ESPN, the Fifa World Cup, who had been airing the matches together for nearly two decades, with a bid of roughly $250 million. I never had anything against the way Fox broadcasted the matches at the time, but after experiencing NBCSN, I can tell you without a doubt in my mind that I don’t want it to go back to the way it was. When Fox Soccer aired the matches, you were required to have a Fox Soccer 2 Go subscription if you wanted to watch any matches that were not aired live on TV. This subscription could be purchased in two separate ways. A monthly subscription would have cost you $19.99 per month, or you could opt to pay for the subscription annually, paying $169.99, saving you roughly $70 a year. With this subscription, you gained access to watch thousands of matches from the EPL to the Champions League on your computer and mobile devices, but it cost you a pretty penny. This brings me to the best part of NBCSN coverage of the EPL. Not only will NBCSN air all 380 EPL matches, but they also offer both Premier League Extra Time and NBC Sports Live Extra at no extra cost to everyone who has NBC Sports. Premier League Extra Time is a collection of extra channels that air any match not shown on an NBCUniversal designated channel and NBC Sports Live Extra offers EPL viewers the capability to stream every match live using a desktop or a mobile device for no extra charge. The NBC Sports Live Extra app is supported by both Apple iOS and Android. This may sound too good to be true for EPL fans, but currently the only downside to NBCSN airing the matches is that not every cable provider is currently carrying NBCSN. However, NBCSN claims on its website that it is working hard on adding other providers to a list that already contains WOW!, AT&T U-Verse, DISH and DirecTV.NBCSN is receiving positive feedback from fans too, as last weekend’s EPL debut earned an average of 792,000 viewers and the best rating for an EPL opening weekend in the U.S. with a 0.8. These numbers show a 43 percent increase from last year when the matches were still shown on Fox Soccer. This significant increase is due partly to the sport gaining more fans across the U.S. but also because of the coverage offered by NBCSN. read more
